Raymond Torto

Principal
Torto Wheaton Research

Author, CEO, Public Official, Professor, Department Chairman, Institute Director, Corporate Board Member, Political Advisor to Mayors, Governors and Congressmen. Ray Torto must have trouble keeping a job! More seriously, Ray Torto has a career that spans across the public, academic and private sectors.

As a Professor of Economics he built the Economics Department at the University of Massachusetts in Boston and led the McCormack Institute for Public Affairs. The Institute is a major force in state and local government in Massachusetts.

As a public official, Ray Torto was a policy advisor and led the modernization of the property tax assessing function in the City of Boston, rooting out corruption that got its start in the days of Mayor James M. Curley 40 years earlier. Ray has many entertaining stories about that experience, only discussed over drinks! Ray is also active in politics in Massachusetts and has been an adviser to many of the state's political leaders.

As a businessman, Ray has led Torto Wheaton Research (TWR), a premier real estate advisory and research firm. Ray and his partner Bill Wheaton of MIT provide research and advisory services to the largest real estate investment managers, federal regulators, the rating agencies, the largest banks and pension funds in the country and around the world.

Ray Torto has contributed successfully to research development and information transparency in commercial real estate. TWR was founded in 1982 at a time when information in commercial real estate was nearly nonexistent. The partnership between two university professors helped shape the quality and flow of information now available to commercial real estate investors.

Today, Boston-based TWR provides unrivaled insights based on its highly academic approach, its twenty-three years of experience and its access to deal specific information from its parent company CB Richard Ellis. Highly rigorous and reliable forecasting models, along with proven analytical expertise, have earned the company international recognition.

The author of five books, numerous articles on financial markets and tax policy, quoted often in the real estate press, serving on many boards and a member of most real estate associations, and an acclaimed public speaker, Dr. Torto holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Boston College.
