Frequently Asked Questions
Conferences
What is the conference planning process?
The Conference Committee begins by selecting co-chairs for the event while simultaneously soliciting feedback and suggestions from the general membership. Once the co-chairs are confirmed, they, along with the committee, begin to develop themes and topics for the program. As themes and specific topics emerge, potential speakers and session moderators are discussed and selected.
How do I participate as a panelist or speaker at a conference?
As you can imagine, a good number of experienced PREA members are ready and willing to participate on session panels. We are delighted that many of you would be willing to devote so much time and effort on PREA's behalf. If you would like to volunteer, you can submit your bio, company overview and area of expertise to the PREA staff for future consideration. All those names are kept and given to the Conference Committee and co-chairs. As themes and topics are discussed, content experts are identified as potential speakers. Many speakers are selected from these volunteers.
How come "so and so" is always on the program?
While we always aim to introduce new and different speakers to the program, content is the first priority and will take precedence over a speaker's number of appearances. In other words, if a speaker, who has been on the program a number of times, is truly the best person to address that particular topic or issue, they will be asked again to participate. Typically, there are approximately 15-20 new speakers and participants in any given program. It is important to note that speaking opportunities depend on the number and format of the program sessions, i.e., general sessions versus breakout sessions or panel discussions versus keynote speakers.
Can I be a conference sponsor?
No, PREA does not accept sponsorships at this time. Sponsorships may be considered in the future.
When do you start planning the conferences?
Immediately! As soon as one event is over, we start all over again on the next.
How can I get on the Conference Committee?
Committee membership is at the discretion of the President of the Association, with guidance from the committee chair. If you are interested in serving as a member, the most important criterion is event and committee meeting attendance. There are typically two open committee meetings per year, one at the spring conference and one at the fall conference. Regular attendance and participation is encouraged. You should express your interest to the committee chair or the president.
